DEATHS OF MIGRANT INDIAN WORKERS ABROAD

2157. DR. ANBUMANI RAMADOSS:

Will the Minister of External Affairs be pleased to state:

(a) whether Government has the details of reported deaths of Indian migrant workers belonging to the State of Tamil Nadu in Gulf Countries, African nations and South East Asian countries during the last five years;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the details of steps taken and assistance given during the last five years through Kshetriya Pravasi Sahayata Kendras (KPSK) to all the deceased migrant Indian worker’s relatives abroad from the State of Tamil Nadu?

ANSWER

(a) & (b) As per the information available, 3462 Indian migrant workers belonging to the State of Tamil Nadu died in Gulf Countries, African Nations and South East Asian countries during the last five years.

(c) Kshetriya Pravasi Sahayata Kendra (KPSK) extend assistance to emigrant workers such as guiding them in receiving of an offer for the overseas employment, registering of grievances received from the emigrants or their families/friends, verifying the documents provided to the emigrants by Foreign Employers and Recruitment Agents, applying for Emigration Clearance on behalf of emigrants who are directly recruited by the Foreign Employer and pre- departure counselling to the emigrants. In case of unfortunate incidents of death, they facilitate communication with relatives in coordination with Indian Missions and Posts.

Indian Missions and Posts provide all necessary assistance when Indian migrant worker dies such as completion of the procedures related to death registration, providing assistance for transportation of mortal remains to India or local cremation or burial, securing and settlement of end of service benefits and compensation from the employer and also follow up on cases of death compensation with the local authorities including courts and insurance agencies whenever required.
