INDIAN PROJECTS IN AFGHANISTAN

2019. Lt. Gen. (Dr.) D. P. VATS (Retd.):

SHRI A. VIJAYAKUMAR:

Will the Minister of External Affairs be pleased to state:

(a) the number of projects on infrastructure/development projects undertaken in Afghanistan;

(b) whether many of Indian projects are under destruction and development work has gone in vain due to increase in Taliban activism in Afghanistan; and

(c) whether any measures have been taken to ensure/safeguard the Indian investment/people in Afghanistan?

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
[SHRI V. MURALEEDHARAN]

(a) to (c) India has committed humanitarian and development assistance of over US $ 3 billion to Afghanistan, under which more than 500 infrastructure / development projects have been undertaken since 2001. Completed projects have been handed over to the Government of Afghanistan.

Government remains vigilant and closely monitors the evolving security situation. We are in contact with the Government of Afghanistan for the protection of Indian investments, ongoing projects and Indian nationals.

The Indian Mission and Posts in Afghanistan continue to extend all necessary assistance to Indian nationals in Afghanistan. Security advisories for Indian nationals are issued regularly. As a security measure in July 2021, India-based personnel from our Consulate in Kandahar were temporarily withdrawn.
