INDIANS BROUGHT BACK DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Will the Minister of External Affairs be pleased to state:

(a) the number of students who went abroad for studies during the last five years, State-wise;

(b) the number of Indians living in foreign countries for employment, country-wise; and

(c) the number of Indians brought back from foreign countries, country-wise under Vande Bharat Mission during the COVID-19 pandemic, State-wise details thereof?

(a) The total number of students who went abroad in the last five years as per Bureau of Immigration is as follows:

2016 - 3,71,506
2017 - 4,56,823
2018 - 5,20,342
2019 - 5,88,931
2020 - 2,61,406


State-wise figures are difficult to ascertain as a student domiciled in one State could have departed from another State. However, as per the issuance of passport, the numbers from different States are given at Annexure –I. Urdu.pdf

(b) As per data provided by Bureau of Immigration, 1,37,89,439 Indians have traveled overseas in the last five years (01.01.2016 to 30.06.2021), on employment visa. The country-wise data is given at Annexure-II. Urdu.pdf

(c) Total number of Indians brought back from foreign countries during Covid-19 under Vande Bharat Mission as on 30 April 2021 is 60,92,264. A summary sheet of the persons repatriated and country and State-wise details are placed at Annexure III. Urdu.pdf
