RE-WORKING OF INDO-NEPAL TREATY

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether there is a proposal from Nepal to re-work the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the Government of India and Government of Nepal, 1950;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the security concerns of both the countries were addressed given the fact that the two countries have open border;

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(e) whether any agreement has been signed between India and Nepal for utilizing Indian expertise in employment generation and training of Nepal youth in the IT sector; and

(f) if so, the details thereof?

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
[GEN. (DR) V. K. SINGH (RETD)]

(a) to (d) Both the Governments have agreed to review, adjust and update the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the Government of India and the Government of Nepal. The two sides have agreed to discuss specific proposals, on receipt from the Government of Nepal, at the Foreign Secretary level mechanism. The Government has not yet received a specific proposal from the Nepalese side.

(e) & (f) No such agreement has been signed between India and Nepal utilizing India’s expertise in employment generation and training of Nepal youth in the IT sector. The Government of India has, however, been extending training to Nepalese candidates at institutions in India for various courses, including courses in the IT sector, under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation programme.
