Visit of H.E. Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, European Union High Representative/ Vice President to India (16-18 January 2020)

On the invitation of Dr. Jaishankar, EAM, H.E. Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, European Union High Representative/ Vice President (HRVP) visited India from 16-18 January 2020 to participate at Raisina Dialogue 2020. He gave the valedictory address of the Raisina Dialogue on 16 January 2020. This was HRVP Borrell’s first visit outside the EU after he took over as HRVP on 1st December 2019.

HRVP Borrell called on the Prime Minister and reiterated the European Union’s keenness on Prime Minister’s visit to Brussels for the 15th India-EU Summit and apprised him of the priorities of the European Union and the commonalities between India and the EU. Prime Minister conveyed that India and the European Union were natural partners and that he was looking forward to a productive Summit in March 2020. PM reiterated the commitment of India to deepen the engagement with the EU particularly in the fields of Climate Change action, and Trade and Economic relations.

EAM met HRVP Borrell to take stock of the India-EU relations and the way forward, ahead of the planned Summit in March 2020 and discussed the possible deliverables. Both agreed to further enlarge the existing bilateral political, security, economic and trade cooperation and identify new areas for cooperation in connectivity, Indo-Pacific Region, Data Adequacy etc.

Raksha Mantri received HRVP Borrell at his office and discussed the emerging area of Defence and Security Cooperation between India and the EU. HRVP Borrell also met National Security Adviser and held bilateral discussions.
