Visit of External Affairs Minister to Uzbekistan

External Affairs Minister of India, Smt. Sushma Swaraj, paid an official visit to Uzbekistan on 4-5 August 2018. Soon after her arrival, she met the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Abdulaziz Khafizovich Kamilov for extensive discussions. Wide ranging talks were held on bilateral cooperation, regional issues and international affairs. Exchange of high level visits, diversifying the trade basket, prospects of cooperation in space, expansion of defence cooperation, exchange of parliamentary delegations, cultural performances in each other’s countries, promotion of two-way tourist flows were the topics for bilateral cooperation. The two sides also discussed regional and international affairs of mutual interest.

External Affairs Minister paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Nigmatovich Aripov. Diversifying the trade basket and enhancing two-way investments were discussed in the framework of matching the strengths and needs of the two countries as were opportunities for the two business communities in each others’ countries.

EAM continued her engagements on the second day with a call on the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Parliament of Uzbekistan. In the meeting with the Speaker, His Excellency Mr. Nurdinjon Ismailov, External Affairs Minister discussed the expansion of bilateral relations in parliamentary affairs, including the exchange of parliamentary delegations.

External Affairs Minister called on the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, H.E. Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev. She conveyed greetings from the President and Prime Minister of India to H.E. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and conveyed that the Government and people of India were looking forward to his first visit to India which would be an opportunity for India and Uzbekistan to further strengthen bilateral relationship.

EAM paid floral tributes to late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, at his memorial on Shastri Street, who had passed away in Tashkent in 1966. She had a meeting with Uzbek Indologists, Hindi scholars, ICCR alumni and ITEC students. She also inaugurated a two-day Uttar Pradesh Mango Festival in Tashkent. External Affairs Minister also had an interaction with the Indian community of Tashkent.

External Affairs Minister’s visit strengthened the traditional close and friendly ties between India and Uzbekistan. The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss a wide spectrum of bilateral issues in the context of the forthcoming visit of H.E., the President of Uzbekistan to India.
