April 24, 2017

In keeping with the growing ties with the Pacific Island nations, India will organise the Sustainable Development Conference for the Pacific Islands on May 25 and 26, 2017 in Suva, Fiji.

The Conference is being held under the aegis of the Forum for India Pacific Islands Co-operation (FIPIC), which was created in 2014 during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Fiji in order to foster closer co-operation between India and fourteen Pacific Island Countries.

The Conference, in the course of its proceedings, will focus on the environmental challenges and threats facing the small island developing states. The Conference will provide for people-to-people dialogue to encourage an enabling atmosphere that fosters understanding, cooperation and collective action to combat climate change.

The Conference seeks to encourage forming of region wide strategic policies to mitigate and to adapt to climate change, promote regional cooperation and exchange of expertise as well as enhance public-private action to build climate resilience.

Key representatives from all Pacific Island nations, as well as representatives from Government, industry, academia, and think tanks from India and the region are expected to participate in the Conference. A team comprising representatives from the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India as well as New Delhi based The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) recently met key stakeholders in Fiji to prepare for this Conference.
