SOUTH ASIAN UNIVERSITY (SAU)

With the aim of forging a sense of a ‘South Asian consciousness’ by bringing together future generations of South Asians in a common pursuit of quality education , India proposed the establishment of a South Asian University (SAU) at the XIII SAARC Summit in Dhaka in November 2005 .This photo feature highlights the various aspects of this initiative.

    . An Inter-governmental Agreement for the establishment of the SAU was signed on behalf of the respective Governments of the SAARC Members States on April 4, 2007. The South Asian University Act, 2008 was passed by the Indian Parliament which came into force on 23rd January 2009.

    . The University is fully operational. The campus of the SAU is presently located in Akbar Bhawan, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.

    . Late Prof. G.K. Chadha, former Vice–Chancellor of JNU and CEO of the SAU Project Office, was the first President of SAU for a term of five years. Since March, 2014 Prof. Rajiv Saxena, Vice President (in the picture above) is performing the functions of the President after the demise of Prof. G.K. Chadha.

    . SAU’s first academic session commenced on August 26, 2010 on a modest scale from temporary premises with an intake of 50 students from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India in two Masters Courses (Development Economics and Computer Applications).

    . SAU commenced Doctoral courses from the fourth academic year 2013-14. It currently has seven Masters and Doctoral Courses in Sociology, Applied Mathematics, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Development Economics, Law and International Relations. It has 357(226 Male and 131 Female) students and 56 faculty members.

    . These pictures depict the facilities at the SAU presently .The University is currently in the process of obtaining necessary approvals from the civic bodies to the Master Layout Plan of the campus.

The above pie chart shows the number of students in SAU from different SAARC countries.With India having 207 students followed by Bangladesh with 52, Nepal with 34, Afghanistan with 25, Pakistan 16, Bhutan 11, Sri Lanka 09 and Maldives 02. There is also one student from Non SAARC nation in SAU.

    . The operational cost of running the University is met through assessed contributions from all SAARC Member States. India is committed to bearing the capital cost towards the establishment of the University. It is providing 100 acres of land at Maidan Garhi in New Delhi for construction of a permanent campus of the SAU.
