May 11, 2019

Namasthe!
Excellency Mr. Permanent Vice Chairman of Quang Ninh Province, Secretary to Vice President Shri Subba Rao, Secretary East MEA Smt Vijay Thakur Singh, Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Shri Parvathaneni Harish, Senior officials from Department of Foreign affairs, Health, Labour, War-Invalid and Social Affairs from government of Vietnam and other officials.

Distinguished Guests,
Sisters and Brothers,

It gives me immense pleasure to be with all of you at Embassy of India, Hanoi for the inauguration of Jaipur Foot Artificial Limb Fitment Camp being held under the ‘India For Humanity’ program in the context of the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

As per the Indian world view, the entire world is one large family. The following verse from the Ramayana, the ancient Indian epic written around the 7th century BC, encapsulates this universal vision.

"Ayam Nijah Paroveti Ganana Laghuchetasam
Udaara Purushaanaam tu Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”

Only the narrow mined categorize people as ‘our own’ and ‘others’. For those who have a large heart, the entire world is just a large family. One corollary of this view which follows from the concept of the whole world being seen as one family, is the attitude of empathy, of sharing and caring, of a sharp focus on alleviating the agony of fellow human beings.

Mahatma Gandhi’s life is an eloquent expression of this attitude and value system. As he himself had said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

This vision of service and humanism, and transforming noble thoughts to tangible action has inspired many generation of world leaders.

It is the same vision Lord Buddha has given to the world 2500 years ago. That noble vision provides the spring board for the initiative ‘India For Humanity’.

For this, Government of India has selected one of the great scientific innovations emerging out of India which has transformed and continues to transform numerous lives namely, Jaipur Foot.

It is an initiative that provides to the differently abled persons a sense of freedom and mobility, a sense of dignity and an ability to live life fully.

Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, in short, BMVSS the world’s largest non -profit organisation for fitment of artificial limbs.

What is remarkable is that they provide these services completely free of charge. The iconic Jaipur Foot is lighter than all the other artificial limbs and has transformed the lives of thousands and helped them lead a life of dignity and become productive members of the community.

This partnership between our Government and BMVSS is a partnership of love. It is a partnership of service. It is a partnership for compassion. It is a partnership to honour the life of one of the greatest human beings of our generation, Mahatma Gandhi.

It was Mahatma Gandhi who said

"I am endeavoring to see God through service of humanity; for I know that God is neither in heaven, nor down below, but in everyone”.

It is this spirit of service to the entire humanity without any distinction of caste, creed, race or religion which we seek to capture in this initiative ‘ India for Humanity ’.

Last year Government of India successfully organized a Jaipur Foot Camp in the provinces of Phu Tho and Vin Phuc benefitting hundreds of people with disabilities. The positive response among the Vietnamese beneficiaries was overwhelming.

The present Jaipur Foot Limb fitment camp is being organized for the provinces of Quang Ninh and Yen Bai of Vietnam.

I would like to appreciate the efforts of People’s Committee of Quang Ninh, Rehabilition Hospital of Quang Ninh who have worked with Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Samiti (BMVSS), M/s Huu Nghi Joint Stock Company and the Embassy of India to make this camp a reality and help the numerous beneficiaries stand tall and lead dignified lives.

I would also like to extend my best wishes and appreciation to the provincial authorities in Yen Bai Province and M/s R.K.Marble Vietnam Company Limited, where the second phase of the Camp would be held.

Dear sisters and brothers

The core philosophy of India from time immemorial has been to share and care. While you acquire wealth and celebrate success, you must always pay attention to the needs of others, particularly the deprived sections. Being helpful to others who are in need has to be our way of life.

I am pleased to be a part of the event today and hope that many more such collaborative initiatives will be taken up by both the countries in the years to come.

I would like to congratulate all the officials and organizations involved in organizing this event.

Jai Hind!
