Joint Press Statement on the Visit of the Vice President of the Republic of India to the Republic of Peru

  • The Vice President of India H.E Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu paid an official visit to the Republic of Peru from 10th to 12th May 2018. The Vice President was accompanied by a high-level delegation including the Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Shri Jasvantsinh Sumanbahi Bhabhor, four Members of Parliament and senior officers of the Government of India.
  • The visit began with a courtesy call on the President of Peru H.E Mr. Martin Alberto Vizcarra Cornejo who was accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru H.E. Mr. Nestor Popolizio Bardales and Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru H.E. Mr. Rogers Valencia. Both sides took note of the expanding relations between the two countries, and expressed a strong desire to deepen and diversify the multifaceted ties, and to elevate the bilateral relationship to a higher level.
  • The Vice President of India and accompanying delegation held talks with the Peruvian delegation which was led by Prime Minister of Peru H.E. Mr. Cesar Villanueva. The two sides reviewed the entire spectrum of the bilateral relations and discussed a wide range of regional and international issues of mutual interest. Both sides welcomed the results of the first Joint Commission Meeting held in June, 2017 between India and Peru, and reiterated their commitment to work together, and to identify new areas for Bilateral Technical Cooperation.
  • The two sides highlighted the significant increase in bilateral trade in the previous year, when India became Peru’s seventh largest trading partner. India and Peru welcomed the progress achieved during the second round of negotiations for a comprehensive trade agreement covering goods, services and investments and underscored the importance of intensifying the negotiations for an early conclusion of the Agreement. The third round of negotiations will be held in August 2018, in New Delhi.
  • Both Parties, with the view of working together to promote bilateral technical cooperation in new and renewable energy on the basis of mutual benefit, equality and reciprocity, signed an Agreement between the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy of the Republic of India and the Ministry of Energy and Mining of the Republic of Peru on Cooperation in New and Renewable Energy.
  • The Indian side expressed its desire to engage more closely with the Pacific Alliance, particularly with respect to trade facilitation, investment, and to examine prospects of Alliance-wide arrangements. Both sides agreed to cooperate in exploring ways and means to strengthen India-Pacific Alliance relationship.
  • The two sides expressed their satisfaction that the India-Peru Centre for Excellence in Information Technology (IPCEIT) has performed as per the expectations. The Peruvian side welcomed the Indian proposal to send an expert team to discuss the Peruvian request for an extension of the activities of the IPCEIT.
  • The Peruvian side reiterated its support for India`s candidature for permanent membership in a reformed and expanded United Nations Security Council. Both sides emphasized the need for reforms in UNSC and serious discussions on text-based negotiations at the Intergovernmental Negotiations. Peru, as a current non-permanent member of the Security Council, stressed on promotion of shared values of multiculturalism and strengthening of peace keeping operations.
  • The two sides reiterated their strong condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestation and stressed that there can be no justification whatsoever for any act of terrorism. They emphasized that there should be zero tolerance against terrorism. Both sides expressed their commitment to work together at the United Nations and other multilateral fora for fighting the menace of terrorism.
  • The celebrations commemorating the 55th Anniversary of Establishment of Diplomatic Relations were held during the visit at the Centro Cultural Inca Garcilaso in Lima. The Vice President of India and the Foreign Minister of Peru delivered their addresses on the occasion. The event included traditional Indian and Peruvian cultural performances highlighting the rich cultural heritage of both countries.
  • The Vice President visited the Congress of Peru during the visit and met with President of the Congress of Peru H.E Mr. Luis Fernando Galarreta Velarde and members of the India-Peru Parliamentary Friendship League. Both sides discussed issues of common interests and agreed to further enhance parliamentary cooperation and exchanges between India and Peru.
  • The Vice President of India addressed the Indian community in Peru and exchanged views on various aspects. He also visited an ancient archeological site, museum and other places of historic and cultural importance in and around Lima.
  • The Vice President of India, Shri. M. Venkaiah Naidu, on behalf of the Government of India and his delegation, thanked the people and Government of Peru for the hospitality extended during his visit.
