April 26, 2018

External Affairs Minister of India, Smt. Sushma Swaraj, paid an official visit to Mongolia on 25-26 April 2018 at the invitation of H. E. Mr. Damdin Tsogtbaatar, Foreign Minister of Mongolia. This was the first visit by an Indian External Affairs Minister to Mongolia in 42 years.

During her visit, EAM held talks with Foreign Minister Tsogtbaatar and called on the President of Mongolia, H.E. Mr. Khaltmaagiin Battulga, Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh and Speaker of the Great Khural (Mongolian Parliament), H.E. Mr. Mieyegombo Enkhbold.

EAM also co-chaired the 6th India-Mongolia Joint Committee on Cooperation Meeting (IMJCC) along with Foreign Minister Tsogtbaatar on 25 April 2018. The IMJCC is a high-level bilateral consultative mechanism to discuss a wide range of issues covering the entire gamut of bilateral relations between the two countries. The last meeting of the IMJCC was held in New Delhi in 2016.

During the IMJCC, EAM and the Mongolian Foreign Minister discussed issues related to political, strategic, trade & economic, cultural and educational cooperation and reviewed the progress on various projects announced during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mongolia in May 2015.

Both sides agreed to further intensify their cooperation in energy, trade & economy, IT, healthcare, animal husbandry, capacity building, infrastructure development and other developmental sectors. Recognizing the huge potential for cooperation between the two countries, both sides agreed to work towards removing institutional and logistical impediments to boost trade, tourism and people-to-people contact, and improve connectivity between the two countries.

During her visit, EAM also delivered a keynote address to mark the birth centenary celebrations of Venerable Kushok Bakula Rimpoche in Ulaanbaatar on 25 April 2018 jointly organized by the Mongolian Foreign Ministry, Gandan Monastery and other Buddhist organizations in Mongolia. Venerable Kushok Bakula was the longest serving Ambassador of India to Mongolia and is revered for his seminal contribution to development of India-Mongolia bilateral ties and promotion of Buddhist linkages with Mongolia.
