TAMILS IN SRI LANKA

3791. SHRIMATI VANAROJA R.:

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government is aware that as per a report, more efforts were needed for the improvement of the human rights situation of Sri Lanka concerning the Tamils and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether India has set a time frame for the Sri Lankan Government to act on human rights concerns; and

(c) if so, the details thereof?

(a) During the 34th Session of United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in March, 2017, the High Commissioner for Human Rights (HCHR) presented the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the progress made in the implementation of Human Rights Council resolution 30/1 on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka between October 2015 and January 2017.

(b) & (c) India continues to remain engaged with Sri Lanka at all levels on its efforts to build a future that accommodates the aspirations of all sections of society, including the Sri Lanka Tamil community, for a life of equality, justice, peace and dignity in a united Sri Lanka.
