MEDIATION BY IRAN

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:
(a) whether Iran has expressed its desire to mediate between India and Pakistan as Iran is a close friend of both countries;
(b) if so, the details thereof and the views of the Government on the offer of Iran;
(c) whether India and Iran are working to provide Afghanistan with access to the port of Chabahar which will help address root cause of Afghan crisis; and
(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) No.
(b) Does not arise.
(c) & (d) During the visit of the Prime Minister to Iran in May 2016, India, Iran and Afghanistan signed an Agreement to establish International Transport and Transit Corridor. The Agreement provides necessary legal framework for the movement of goods and passengers
across the territories of the parties (India, Iran and Afghanistan) using Chabahar port, thus providing Afghanistan an assured and alternate access to regional markets through sea.
