TALKS WITH CHINA

6376. SHRI KAPIL MORESHWAR PATIL:

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government has expressed its point and urged China to change its stand on the proposed economic corridor and terrorism;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the response of the Chinese Government thereto; and

(c) the other diplomatic steps being taken to ask China not to go ahead with the above project?

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
[GEN. (DR) V. K. SINGH (RETD)]

(a) to (c) Government has conveyed to the Chinese side, including at the highest level, its concerns about their activities in PoK and asked them to cease these activities. China is assisting Pakistan in the development of the so called ‘China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)’. Some of the proposed projects under CPEC are in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). It has been pointed out to them that Pakistan has been in illegal occupation of parts of the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir since 1947.

China has often repeated its concern on spread of terrorism and their desire to cooperate with us on this issue. On several occasions, China has reiterated with us their resolute opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations with ‘zero tolerance’, and has agreed that there is no justification for terrorism. Given the convergence in our respective positions, Government has conveyed to China that their stated position on terrorism should be demonstrated in concrete terms through practical steps in bilateral and multilateral fora.

Government remains engaged with China as well as with the international community to sensitise them about India’s concerns, and about the threat terrorism poses to international peace, security and development.
