EAM's address at the 5th International Day of Yoga celebrations for Diplomatic Corps at PBK in New Delhi

June 21, 2019

Namaskar,

Ministerial colleague Minister of State, Muraleedharan ji, Director General ICCR, Akhilesh Mishra, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen.

It’s my great pleasure to see you all today on the occasion of the 5th International Day of Yoga. Thank you all for being here today.

When Prime Minister called for observing 21st June as the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014, this proposal received an unprecedented response. What we saw was a record 177 countries adopting a resolution in a record time of 75 days.

The Ministry of External Affairs has been proud to be associated with International efforts thereafter to take action on this commitment to observe the International Day of Yoga.

Events at iconic landmarks across the globe have taken place with the participation of hundreds of thousands of people. Heads of State, Heads of Government, Senior Dignitaries, Celebrities and ordinary people have all graced the occasion.

Friends, this morning Prime Minister said that Yoga belongs to everyone and everyone belongs to Yoga. Its inclusion as world intangible cultural heritage by the UNESCO underlines its global significance and benefits for entire humanity. Its growing reach and acceptance is evident everywhere and I am sure particularly in the countries that are represented here. Yoga is today found in the curriculum of schools, in the training of armies, and in the motivational techniques of global corporations.

Its not just a science, it is a science of well-being, the science of integrating body, mind and soul, the science of actualizing our true potential.

By celebrating the International Day of Yoga together, we celebrate our common humanity. We are recognizing that we have shared bonds. We are also acknowledging our sense of a shared global destiny.

Friends, I take this opportunity to thank the International community today for the tremendous response that we have received for our proposal of adopting 21st June as the International Day of Yoga in UN and its inclusion as World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. I would like to recognise also the support that our Missions and Posts abroad have got from all your countries in hosting successful celebrations of International Day of Yoga every year.

I thank you all for your presence here and wish you health, happiness and peace through regular practice of Yoga.

In conclusion, let me say that let the light of yoga illuminate the world, elevate the mind and empower mankind everywhere.

Thank you!
धन्यवाद् !
