September 19, 2018

Press Statement with President of Romania
President of Romania, H.E. Klaus Iohannis,
Members of the Indian & Romanian delegations,
Friends from the Media,

It is a matter of great pleasure for me to visit the beautiful country Romania. The visit by an Indian Vice President to Romania coinciding with the 70th Anniversary of our development relationship between both the countries on diplomatic level on Centenary Year of Romania is highly opportune.

India and Romania relations predate our independence. Today, we are bound together as much by our shared values of democracy and rule of law as by our responsibility as international partners contributing to peace, security and stability in our regions and the world.

This morning’s talks with President and his delegation were very meaningful and very productive. We acknowledged the longstanding excellent relations between India and Romania, reviewed bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and reaffirmed the mutual desire to comprehensively strengthen our partnership across the political, economic, science & technology, culture and people-to-people domains.

We focused on strengthening our trade and investment relationship covering sectors such as ICT, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, infrastructure, logistics, agri-foods, tourism. Later today, I will meet with CEOs from both countries at the India-Romania Business Event which, I hope, will result in collaborations to diversify our trade basket and deepen the economic linkages between our countries.

I am pleased to know that yoga is popular in Romania. India is happy to share our ancient legacy of yoga for the health, harmony and holistic well-being of people in the world. Ayurveda is the Indian traditional system of medicine. Given the interest of Romanian people for benefitting from Ayurveda, we have decided to launch ayurveda Information Cell for disseminating information about Ayurveda conduct workshops with experts and create awareness about the preventive, curative and palliative benefits of Ayurveda.

India values its partnership with European Union. We seek Romanian support to carry forward the negotiations on India- EU free trade agreement for early and balanced outcomes. These discussions are going on for last three years, I am happy excellency that you have promised that you will take initiative to take them forward during your presidency which is going to come this year end.

In our discussions today, we shared thoughts on regional and global issues with friendly candour. We will intensify cooperation at the United Nations and other multilateral forums in order to address global challenges such as climate change, terrorism and progress towards sustainable development.

India appreciates Romania’s support to India’s aspiration for permanent membership of United Nations Security Council to reflect contemporary realities.

We share views on global issues ranging from trade to environment to disarmament. Romania’s valuable support to India’s efforts at seeking membership of Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) is appreciated.

We underscored the need to fight the scourge of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and work together to eliminate the financing of terror and safe havens for terrorists and their sponsors. We thank Romania for supporting India’s efforts at developing consensus on draft Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT)

Romania will assume Presidency of the European Union from January 2019, for which I convey best wishes of 1.3 billion Indians. We appreciate Romania’s spirit to succeed and have faith in its efforts for a better tomorrow.

India is an old and bankable friend of Romania and we look forward to intensified cooperation and collaboration across the board for the mutual benefit of our people and countries together.

Thank You
