Press Statement by Vice President in Warsaw, Poland (April 27, 2017)

April 27, 2017

Excellency, Ms. Beata Syzdlo, Hon’ble Prime Minister of Poland,
Distinguished delegates,
Members of the Media,

I am very happy to visit Poland. It is a country with strong ties with Indians that predate our Independence. We still fondly remember the young children from Poland who became our guests, with the Maharaja of Jamnagar, during the Second World War. Strong ties continued after our Independence and in past few decades we have built strong economic relations.

I had a very productive meeting with the Prime Minister today. We reviewed the entire gamut of our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international issues of common concern. We have agreed on the need to take our strong relationship to a higher level. We feel that there is much scope for our cooperation in sectors like food processing, solar energy, clean coal, treatment of waste water and solid waste where Polish expertise can find opportunities in the rapidly growing Indian market. We are aware of Poland’s strength in railways and defence sector and would be happy to use it to promote manufacturing in India. India is now a major investor in Poland. Many Indian students have started coming to Poland to pursue professional and higher education. We are also encouraged by the natural appreciation of Indian culture in Poland.

We have signed today a MoU to deepen our bilateral ties in the field of Agriculture. This will provide us with a framework for identifying specific areas for deeper cooperation.

We are pleased at the reception Indian culture receives in Poland. With the active support of the Government of Poland, we will be mounting an ambitious and diverse Festival of India in several cities in Poland in the latter half of 2017 to showcase Indian cultural elements for the people, particularly the youth of Poland.

As vibrant democracies, we also share views on the need to adopt a comprehensive and principled stance against the scourge of terrorism. We agree on the need for the early adoption of Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the UN. We appreciate the support extended by Poland to India’s membership of Missile Technology Control Regime and India’s application for the membership of Nuclear Suppliers Group. We are happy to have Poland’s support for India’s claim for permanent membership of an expanded UN Security Council.

Thank you
